For many believers, the fear of losing their standing with God is a heavy burden. You might find yourself asking in moments of weakness, "Can I actually lose salvation?" This question often arises when we look at our own failures instead of looking at the cross. As GNM’s Chief Theology Scholar, I want to invite you to lift your eyes from your performance and gaze upon the finished work of Jesus Christ. The gospel is not a message of temporary safety; it is the good news of eternal security.

The Foundation of Our Security: The Finished Work

To understand why you cannot lose salvation, we must first look at how you received it. Salvation is not a reward for your good behavior, nor is it maintained by your strength. It is a gift of pure, unmerited grace. If your salvation depended on your ability to keep it, you would surely lose it. But your security rests entirely on the perfect, once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.— Hebrews 10:14, KJV

When Jesus cried out, "It is finished," the debt of your sin was paid in full—past, present, and future. If Christ has perfected you "for ever" through His one offering, there is no sin you can commit that can undo His finished work. To suggest a believer can lose salvation is to suggest that the blood of Jesus was insufficient to cover all their sins.

Sealed by the Holy Spirit

The moment you believed the gospel of grace, a supernatural transaction took place. You were not merely placed on probation; you were permanently sealed by the Holy Spirit. In the ancient world, a king’s seal represented ownership, security, and an irreversible decree.

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,— Ephesians 1:13, KJV

God has placed His divine seal upon you. This seal is the Holy Spirit Himself, who acts as the guarantee of your final inheritance. God does not break His own seal. You belong to Him, and He has promised to keep you secure until the day He brings you home to glory.

Held Secure in the Father's Hand

Sometimes we feel as though our grip on God is slipping. In those moments, we must remember that our security does not depend on our grip on Him, but on His unbreakable grip on us. Jesus gave us a beautiful, comforting picture of this double-handed security.

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.— John 10:28-29, KJV

You are held in the hand of Jesus, and wrapped in the hand of the Father. No circumstance, no enemy, and not even your own failures can pluck you out of those almighty hands. "Eternal life" would be a misnomer if it could be lost tomorrow. By definition, the life Jesus gives you is everlasting.

Resting in Unconditional Love

The fear of losing salvation vanishes when we truly comprehend the depth of God's love. God did not love you because you were perfect; He loved you while you were yet a sinner. His love is not performance-based, and therefore, His salvation is not performance-preserved.

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.— Romans 8:38-39, KJV

Note that "nor any other creature" includes you. You cannot even separate yourself from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus. Rest in this beautiful truth today. Your salvation is as secure as the Savior who bought you. You are saved by grace, kept by grace, and sealed for eternity.
