The Danger of Leaning on Our Own Understanding

We live in a culture that worships control. We are told that if we plan carefully enough, work hard enough, and think ahead, we can secure our own peace and protect ourselves from the storms of life. But when the unexpected trial hits—when a medical report is unfavorable, a relationship fractures, or a financial storm arrives—we quickly realize how fragile our self-reliance truly is. In these moments of crisis, our natural instinct is to lean heavily on our own understanding, trying to figure out a way through the darkness on our own.

Leaning on our own understanding is like leaning on a broken reed; it cannot support our weight and will only pierce our hands. Our human perspective is incredibly limited. We see only the immediate pain, the immediate problem, and the immediate fear. But God sees the entire landscape. He sees the end from the beginning, and He is working in ways that our limited understanding cannot comprehend.

To trust God more, we must intentionally decide to let go of our desperate need to understand every detail of the process. Trust is not demanding answers before we obey; it is believing in the goodness and character of the One who holds the answers, even when we walk through the dark.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.— Proverbs 3:5-6, KJV

Finding the Anchor of Perfect Peace

There is a deep, supernatural peace that is available to the believer, but it cannot be found in the absence of trials. It is found only in the presence of trust. When we keep our minds stayed on the Lord, He promises to keep us in perfect peace. This 'perfect peace' is the Hebrew 'shalom shalom'—a double peace that is completely independent of external circumstances. It is a peace that stands guard over our hearts when everything around us is shaking.

Keeping our mind 'stayed' on God means fixing our focus on His character, His promises, and His faithfulness. If we spend all our time staring at the storm, our hearts will be filled with anxiety. But if we fix our gaze on the Creator of the wind and the waves, our souls will find rest. Trust is a muscle that grows stronger every time we choose to look away from our problems and look toward our Savior.

Remind yourself of what God has already done. Remember the prayers He has answered, the valleys He has led you through, and the grace that has sustained you. The same God who was faithful in your yesterday is already in your tomorrow, waiting to carry you through whatever comes.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.— Isaiah 26:3, KJV

Resting in the Sovereignty of His Purpose

One of the hardest parts of trusting God is walking through seasons where His plan does not align with our desires. We pray for healing, but the pain persists; we pray for open doors, but they remain shut. In these quiet, confusing spaces, the enemy whispers that God has forgotten us or that He does not care. But the KJV Scripture reminds us of an unshakeable promise: all things are working together for our ultimate good and His ultimate glory.

This promise does not mean that every situation we face is good in itself. Suffering, betrayal, and sickness are painful realities of a broken world. But it means that God is so sovereignly powerful that He can take the worst situations and redeem them for our spiritual maturity. He is using the fire of the trial to refine our faith, stripping away our self-reliance so that we might lean completely on His grace.

You do not have to see the final picture to trust the Hand of the Artist. Trust that He is doing a deep, beautiful work in your soul that will outlast the temporary trials of this life. Rest in His love, rely on His strength, and trust that He is leading you exactly where you need to go.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.— Romans 8:28, KJV

Place your heart fully into the hands of your Heavenly Father today. Refuse to lean on your own understanding, keep your mind fixed on His unshakeable promises, and trust that He is working all things together for your good. He is a faithful Shepherd, a sovereign King, and He will direct your paths through every valley and every storm.
