The Name Above All Names

Philippians 2:9–11 (KJV)

↓   read below

God gave Him a name above every name. Not above most names — above every name. That includes the name of your diagnosis. The name of your addiction. The name of your fear. Every name bows to one Name.

"Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

— Philippians 2:9–11, KJV

The Apostle Paul writes these words in the context of what Jesus voluntarily gave up to save you. He begins: "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant." The exaltation in verse nine — the Name above every name — is the result of the humiliation in the verses before it. Jesus descended to the lowest point of human existence so that He could be raised to the highest point of cosmic authority.

And that authority is expressed in a name. There is something about a name. Names carry weight in Scripture — they carry identity, covenant, power, and promise. When God changes someone's name in the Bible, He is changing their destiny. And when He gives Jesus a name above every name, He is establishing the supremacy of Christ over every category of reality: things in heaven, things in earth, and things under the earth. Nothing is excluded. No realm of existence is exempt from the authority of His name.

This has staggering implications for your daily life. The name of your depression — Jesus is above it. The name of your addiction — Jesus is above it. The name of the disease they put in your chart — Jesus is above it. The name of the shame that has followed you for years — Jesus is above it. Every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. That includes the voices that have been telling you there is no hope. That includes the internal voice of condemnation. Even that tongue will one day confess.

You carry this name. When you speak the name of Jesus into your situation, you are introducing the highest authority in the universe into that room. Not as a magic formula — but as an invitation to the One who already holds sovereignty over all things. Pray His name over your children. Pray His name over your marriage. Pray His name over the thing you are afraid to name aloud. He is above it. He has always been above it. And at His name, every knee — every circumstance, every stronghold — will ultimately bow.

✦ This is the truth over your life today

"God gave Him a name above every name. That means above the name of what you are fighting. Above the name of what has been spoken over you. At the name of Jesus, every knee bows — and that includes the thing on your knees right now."
