The Enemy Has to Ask for Permission
Spiritual warfare is a phrase that often conjures up images from Hollywood horror films—flickering lights, spinning heads, and absolute terror. We have conditioned ourselves to believe that when the enemy attacks, it is a chaotic, terrifying event where the odds are somehow fifty-fifty. But that is a lie born in the very darkness we are supposed to be defeating. If you are a child of God, the unseen battle is real, but it is entirely rigged in your favor. When we look at the life of Jesus, we do not see a Savior who is stressed out by demonic forces. We see absolute, unrivaled sovereignty. There is no sweat on His brow, no frantic negotiation. He does not panic when the shadows rise.
The modern church often gives the enemy far too much credit, painting a picture of a cosmic arm-wrestling match between God and Satan. But the devil is a created being, and he is on a leash. When we read the mandate in Ephesians 6:10, 'Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power,' it is because His power is undisputed. The battle is not a question of who is stronger; it is a question of whose authority you are standing in. You do not have to generate the power to defeat the darkness; you only have to put on the full armor of God and stand in the victory that has already been accomplished on your behalf.
Look at how the kingdom of darkness responds to the presence of Jesus. They do not attack Him; they beg Him. They know exactly who He is, and they know their time is short. You might feel overwhelmed by the spiritual forces of evil in your life right now. You might be waking up at three in the morning with a heavy chest, feeling like the walls are closing in. But I need you to understand that the enemy harassing you has absolutely no authority over the Christ who lives inside of you. The demons had to ask for an eviction notice. Jesus didn't even give them a full sentence. He just gave them one word.
So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine. And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.— Matthew 8:31-32, KJV
You Are Not Left Unarmed
It is one thing to recognize that there is a battle raging around you; it is another entirely to realize you have been fully equipped for it. The armor of God is not some cute, metaphorical Sunday School lesson involving cardboard swords and tin-foil breastplates. It is the very character, presence, and protection of Jesus Christ wrapped around your fragile human frame. When the Apostle Paul tells us to put on the armor, he is telling us to put on Christ. You are not stepping onto the battlefield in your own strength, your own righteousness, or your own peace. You are stepping out clothed in the indestructible life of the Son of God.
Jesus knew we would face a dark world. He knew the absolute exhaustion of fighting unseen battles. He sat at a table with His own betrayer, fully aware of the spiritual forces converging on His life. Yet, He did not leave His disciples with a sense of impending doom. He left them with a promise. He knew that the devil's schemes would try to isolate us, to make us feel like we are fighting in a vacuum where God cannot hear us. The greatest trick the enemy plays is convincing you that you are fighting alone, that heaven has abandoned you to the wolves.
But God is not through with you. Stop making excuses and exchange your fear for the expectation of greater grace. You made it through the waters, and you are going to see the other side. Jesus Himself petitioned the Father to ensure that you would never have to face a single night of spiritual warfare on your own. He promised a Comforter—not just a cheerleader, but an Advocate, a Spirit of truth who takes up permanent residence inside of you. The Holy Spirit is the ultimate advantage in any spiritual conflict.
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.— John 14:16-18, KJV
Clearing the Temple of Your Mind
Sometimes spiritual warfare isn't an exorcism; it is an eviction notice to the anxiety, fear, and lies that have taken up illegal residence in your mind. We often look for the devil in the spectacular—in the massive tragedies or the undeniable supernatural events. But the devil's schemes are usually much more subtle. He sets up shop in the daily commerce of your thought life. He trades in insecurity, sells you bitterness, and bankrupts your peace. Before you know it, the space that was meant for communion with God has become a noisy, chaotic marketplace of worst-case scenarios.
Your mind and your heart are sacred ground. You are the temple of the Holy Spirit. But just like the physical temple in Jerusalem, if you do not guard the doors, thieves will come in and set up their tables. You have to be willing to get down to a rescue mission in your own soul. You have to look at the anxiety that is robbing your sleep and the depression that is stealing your joy, and you have to flip those tables. You cannot politely ask the darkness to leave. You must stand firm with the belt of truth buckled around your waist and drive out the lies with the word of God.
Jesus wept over Jerusalem because they did not recognize the time of their visitation. They missed their peace. Do not miss your peace because you are too intimidated to fight for it. When Jesus walked into the temple, He didn't form a committee to discuss the inappropriate use of the space. He took immediate, decisive action to reclaim what belonged to the Father. You must do the same with your mind. Put on the armor of God today, right now, and declare that your mind is a house of prayer, not a den of anxiety.
And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought; Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.— Luke 19:45-46, KJV
Fighting From Victory, Not For It
The most profound truth about spiritual warfare is that the war has already been won. We are fighting a defeated enemy. When the day of evil comes—and it will come—you are commanded to stand your ground. You are not commanded to advance and conquer the devil; Jesus already did that. You are simply told to hold the territory that was purchased for you at Calvary. After you have done everything to stand, stand firm. You can stand firm because the ground beneath your feet is soaked in the blood of the Lamb.
At the Last Supper, Jesus looked at the men who would scatter, deny Him, and betray Him. He knew the sheer violence of the spiritual warfare that was about to erupt in Gethsemane and culminate on Golgotha. Yet, in the face of all that darkness, He took a cup of wine and instituted a covenant that would echo through eternity. He didn't offer them a strategy for avoiding the pain; He offered them His very life. He gave them the ultimate weapon against the powers of this dark world: the blood of the new testament.
That blood speaks a better word over your life than the lies the enemy is whispering to you right now. When the accuser tries to remind you of your failures, point him to the blood. When the spiritual forces of evil try to convince you that your family is going under, point them to the blood. You do not have to be afraid of the dark when you carry the Light of the World inside of you. The Lord is not through with you. Don't faint from the battle so you miss the blessing. Lift up your head, put on your armor, and step into the victory that was signed, sealed, and delivered by the King of Kings.
And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.— Matthew 26:27-28, KJV
You are not a victim of your circumstances, nor are you a casualty of the unseen realm. The spiritual warfare you are experiencing today is simply the enemy's desperate tantrum against the indestructible calling God has placed on your life. Stand your ground. The armor is real, the Comforter is present, and the blood of Jesus has never lost its power. Walk in that authority today, knowing that the same God who commands the demons to flee is holding you safely in the palm of His hand.
